Creative Writing Club’s Uptick in Members, with New ‘Zine’

By Cassandra McCoy Dedomenico

College of Southern Nevada has many extracurricular clubs and organizations that align with students’ interests and passions. The Creative Writing Club sees new insurgence of members.

The brand new, re-established Creative Writing Club has recently published its first monthly Zine: a magazine.

According to Club President Crystal Sullivan, “I definitely have a goal of the Zine being more for school spirit. If you’re not necessarily a writer in the club — say you are a musician — it would be cool to take on that proud moment of submitting your work because it’s open to everyone not just members.”

In the recent October Zine premiere edition, there are works of fiction, graphic design, photography and even astrology charts, all done by students. Collaborating on a project with peers at school is important for student outreach and spirit.

In a 2023 survey conducted by Student Voice of 3,000 college students, nearly one-in-three students spends no time weekly on extracurriculars and campus events. CSN hopes to change this and get students involved.

“What I notice with the Fine Arts Club is that it also struggled with membership, until it had a spike this semester as well, like our club did,” Sullivan said. “I think us coming out of Covid-era did that, and now that we’ve began to come together and find community that has been more of a theme this semester and has helped other clubs that struggled in the past.”

Faculty Adviser Angela Spires oversees the Creative Writing Club’s meetings and helps where she is needed. “As an adviser I let the students run the club.” Student participation in clubs can help grow leadership and communication skills.

According to Club Vice President Alex Ramos, student involvement in this club has no limit. “Our [club] has over 130 members in it and people hop in and out of it all the time.”

“Big shoutout to Crystal, she kept with it . . .through the Covid years, and she decided to kind of make it her own passion project,” Ramos said. “Especially this semester, when she saw that a lot of people were interested in getting involved in campus life.”
